Lightning Bolt

Lightning Bolt
The lightning bolt in action on stage!

I built this electronic lightning bolt for my school's musical, The Lightning Thief, with the help of a peer.

The body is 3D printed with PLA filament, with bolts holding sanded acrylic plates to the front and back to frost the material for better light diffusion. It is 17 inches long, and internally side lit on the front and back with LED strips. It is powered by a 5v battery pack housed in between the LED layers.

Size was the biggest challenge in this project, as it had to be small enough to fit inside of a prop backpack, while still holding the battery pack inside. Through some careful manipulations of the lightning bolt shape (and several cardboard prototypes), the final product was able to fit all of the constraints and be featured in the show!
